MMDA Halts Odd-Even Scheme on EDSA
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced on Sunday, June 1, that it will cancel the odd-even traffic scheme on EDSA following President Marcos’s decision to stop the rehabilitation of the busy thoroughfare. The odd-even scheme was part of a broader traffic management plan aimed at easing congestion along EDSA before the planned rebuild.
MMDA chairperson Don Artes confirmed their commitment to maintaining the current number-coding scheme instead. He explained, “Pursuant to the directive of the President, the MMDA will suspend the imposition of the odd-even scheme which was part of the traffic management plan that was laid down intended to decongest EDSA before the looming rebuild.”
President Marcos Cancels EDSA Rebuild Over Traffic Concerns
Earlier, the President ordered the cancellation of the EDSA rehabilitation project due to worries about the economic impact caused by severe traffic jams. These jams were expected not only on EDSA but also on alternative routes across Metro Manila.
Before the cancellation, the MMDA had drafted several strategies to lighten the traffic burden. These included the odd-even scheme, the use of Mabuhay Lanes, and other alternate routes designed to improve traffic flow.
Looking for Better Traffic Solutions
Don Artes welcomed the President’s decision, saying it offers an opportunity for authorities to explore more effective ways to ease traffic for commuters and motorists alike. “The postponement will give us time to look for other traffic mitigating options for the EDSA Rebuild which will be less than burdensome to motorists and the commuting public,” he added.
As the MMDA continues to focus on traffic management, officials are expected to develop alternative solutions that strike a balance between infrastructure improvements and minimizing inconvenience to daily commuters.
