MMDA, PNOC Sign Deal for Solar Power Integration
MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has partnered with the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) to secure solar power integration for two MMDA facilities. This collaboration aims to harness solar energy, promoting cleaner and more cost-efficient electricity use.
Through a Memorandum of Understanding signed recently, the MMDA and PNOC will install solar power systems in MMDA sites located in Cavite and Pasig City. This initiative reflects their shared commitment to sustainable and energy-efficient infrastructure.
Solar Projects at MMDA Facilities
“Together, we are embarking on projects that represent our shared vision for a cleaner and more energy-efficient future,” said MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes during the signing event. The project includes a ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) system set for the MMDA Carmona Development Center. This facility is now dedicated to training, disaster response, and environmental sustainability efforts.
Additionally, a rooftop solar PV system will be installed at the MMDA Annex Building in Pasig City. This building, alongside the MMDA Head Office, has earned recognition as a Building for Ecologically Responsive Design Excellence (BERDE)-certified government facility. The MMDA aims to further its environmental leadership by achieving a BERDE 3-star rating for the Pasig facility.
PNOC’s Role and Vision for Renewable Energy
PNOC President and CEO Oliver Butalid expressed that this initiative aligns with the company’s goal to promote renewable energy and government energy self-sufficiency. He assured that the solar PV systems will substantially reduce electricity expenses for the MMDA while supporting the government’s renewable energy targets.
“Sa paggamit ng solar PV system, makakatipid nang malaki ang MMDA sa kuryente at makakatulong sa layunin ng gobyerno na palakihin ang paggamit ng renewable energy,” the official said in Filipino, highlighting the project’s benefits.
Officials and Future Outlook
The signing ceremony was also attended by Deputy Chairman Undersecretary Frisco San Juan Jr., General Manager Usec. Procopio Lipana, and other officials from both agencies. Their collaboration marks a significant step toward greener public facilities and sustainable energy use in government operations.
The MMDA’s commitment to integrating solar power systems underscores the growing momentum for renewable energy adoption in the Philippines, which experts say is vital for long-term environmental and economic benefits.
