Senator Welcomes Money Laundering Charges Against Bamban Mayor
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian expressed support on Sunday, May 25, for the recent filing of money laundering cases against the dismissed Bamban, Tarlac mayor, Alice Guo. The senator believes this move is a direct outcome of the Senate’s unwavering efforts to crack down on crimes linked to illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) recently filed charges against Guo, also known as Guo Hua Ping. Gatchalian highlighted the significance of these developments, saying, “The filing of 62 counts of money laundering cases against Alice Guo boosts our campaign to rid the country of POGOs and their illegal activities.”
Impact on Illegal Activities of POGOs
The senator added that the case filings are expected to disrupt the illegal flow of funds that sustain these operations. “We expect this development to severely disrupt the illegal flow of dirty money that fuels their operations and to cripple their financial machinery,” he said.
Gatchalian also urged authorities to broaden their investigation and pursue accountability for those masterminding the POGO networks. He challenged prosecutors by stating, “Hinahamon ko ang ating mga tagausig na palakasin ang mga kaso laban sa lahat ng mga nasa likod ng POGO at tiyaking mananagot sila sa batas.”
Current Charges Against Alice Guo
Alice Guo is now detained at Pasig City Jail. She faces 26 counts of violating the Anti-Money Laundering Act for handling transactions involving money or property obtained through illegal means.
Moreover, the former mayor is charged with five additional counts under the same law for converting, transferring, acquiring, or using such illicit assets. These charges mark a significant step in holding local officials accountable for their involvement in illegal POGO operations.
Authorities hope these charges will send a strong message that illegal financial activities tied to offshore gaming operators will not be tolerated.
