Over 5,000 Evacuated Following Mt. Kanlaon Eruption
More than 5,000 people are still staying in evacuation centers across several towns in Negros Occidental after the recent eruption of Mt. Kanlaon. The eruption, which took place early Tuesday morning, caused ashfall that affected multiple communities, forcing residents to seek safety.
The ashfall impacted areas in Bago City, La Carlota City, and La Castellana City, with at least 21 barangays continuing to experience effects from earlier volcanic activity recorded in December 2024 and April 2025. Many evacuees remain in temporary shelters as authorities monitor the situation closely.
Evacuation and Safety Measures in Effect
A local official confirmed, “Hindi nadagdagan ang mga nag-evacuate. Wala namang natitira sa six-kilometer [permanent] danger zone.” This means no new evacuations were reported, and no residents remain within the permanent six-kilometer danger radius around the volcano.
The eruption occurred around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, with ashfall reaching as far as Bacolod City. Despite the initial eruption, no subsequent explosions have been observed, though authorities have not ruled out the possibility of further volcanic activity.
Current Alert Status of Mt. Kanlaon
Mt. Kanlaon remains at alert level 3, indicating a high level of volcanic unrest. However, there has been no recommendation to raise this alert to level 4, which would signify an imminent hazardous eruption. Local authorities continue to advise residents to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols.
Efforts to monitor the volcano and assist displaced residents are ongoing. Evacuation centers provide shelter and essential services to affected individuals as the situation is carefully assessed.
