More Than 9,000 Aftershocks Recorded Northern Cebu Quake

Aftershocks Surge Following Northern Cebu Earthquake

More than 9,000 aftershocks have rattled Northern Cebu since the powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck, officials reported on Wednesday, October 8. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) updated the public at 10 a.m., confirming a total of 9,108 aftershocks recorded so far.

Of these aftershocks, 1,666 have been precisely mapped, while 38 were strong enough to be felt by residents across the region. Local leaders noted the continuing seismic activity has caused widespread concern among communities.

Seismic Activity Details and Impact

According to sources, the intense frequency of aftershocks has kept many residents on edge. “Dili gyud mi kalma tungod sa sige ug uyog,” a community member shared, expressing the ongoing anxiety caused by the tremors.

Experts explained that aftershocks are common after a major earthquake, as the earth’s crust adjusts to new stresses. However, the unusually high number of aftershocks following the Northern Cebu quake highlights the need for continued vigilance.

Government and Community Response

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm but prepared. Evacuation centers have been opened in vulnerable areas, and emergency teams continue monitoring the situation closely. Officials reported that infrastructure inspections are underway to assess any damage caused by the tremors.

Community members have been advised to secure heavy objects, prepare emergency kits, and stay updated through official channels. “Padayon ta sa pag-amping ug pag-andam,” a local leader emphasized, encouraging cooperation and resilience.

Ongoing Monitoring and Safety Measures

Phivolcs continues to track seismic activity in Northern Cebu, providing regular updates to ensure public safety. The agency reminds everyone that aftershocks can still pose risks, including landslides and structural damage.

Residents are urged to report any unusual activity and follow safety protocols. As the situation evolves, authorities remain committed to protecting communities and minimizing harm.
