Morten Harket Battles Parkinson’s Disease With Courage

Morten Harket’s Parkinson’s Disease Journey

Morten Harket, the iconic vocalist of the Norwegian band a-ha, has revealed his diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease. At 65 years old, Morten shared this personal challenge during an interview with a journalist, as confirmed by the band’s official channels. The news about Morten Harket Parkinson’s disease diagnosis has stirred concern among fans worldwide.

Known as a-ha’s unforgettable frontman, songwriter, and father of five, Morten has openly embraced his condition. “I’ve got no problem accepting the diagnosis,” he said, reflecting on his 94-year-old father’s philosophy about aging and the body’s gradual changes: “I use whatever works.” This attitude highlights his resilience despite the difficulties ahead.

Understanding Parkinson’s Disease and Treatment

Parkinson’s disease arises from the loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain, affecting movement control and communication between the brain and muscles. Though not fatal, the disease progressively worsens, impacting millions globally. Locally, approximately 13,000 Norwegians live with the condition, making it the fastest-spreading neurological illness worldwide.

Morten’s treatment has involved advanced medication and groundbreaking brain surgery performed at a leading medical center in the United States. His Norwegian neurologist, who has strong connections with the US clinic, played a vital role in facilitating this care. This collaboration led to a marked improvement in his symptoms.

Innovative Neurosurgery and Its Effects

In mid-2024, Morten underwent neurosurgery where electrodes were implanted in the left side of his brain. These electrodes connect to a device placed beneath the skin near his chest, delivering precise electrical impulses to ease symptoms. This technique, known as deep brain stimulation (DBS), is one of the most advanced treatments for Parkinson’s.

Later that year, the same procedure was successfully done on the right side of his brain. These surgeries have significantly reduced many physical symptoms, allowing Morten to maintain a better quality of life despite the diagnosis.

Morten’s Thoughts on Music and Message to Fans

When asked about his ability to sing, Morten expressed uncertainty. “I don’t really know. I don’t feel like singing, and for me, that’s a sign,” he explained. While not expecting full technical control, he hopes to find a way to express himself vocally in the future.

To his fans, Morten offered reassurance: “Don’t worry about me. Find out who you want to be – a process that can be new each and every day. Be good servants of nature, the very basis of our existence, and care for the environment while it is still possible to do so. Spend your energy and effort addressing real problems, and know that I am being taken care of.”

Morten Harket’s Legacy with a-ha

a-ha gained worldwide fame after their 1985 debut album “Hunting High and Low,” which featured the chart-topping hit “Take On Me.” The band earned a Grammy nomination the following year for Best New Artist, solidifying their place in pop history. Other beloved songs include “The Sun Always Shines on TV,” “Cry Wolf,” and “The Living Daylights.”

Despite this new chapter with Parkinson’s disease, Morten Harket continues to inspire many through his music and strength. His openness about his journey sheds light on the realities of living with Parkinson’s and the hope modern medicine offers.
