Mother Faces Charges in Child Abuse Case in Basilan
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Police are investigating a tragic child abuse case involving a six-year-old girl who reportedly died after being hit by her own mother in Lamitan City, Basilan, last June 14. Authorities have confirmed that the mother is now facing charges related to the incident.
According to the investigation, the young girl left her home on Saturday afternoon to buy vegetables with a cousin without informing her mother. The mother, enraged by her daughter’s absence, searched for her and found the child by the roadside.
Witnesses recounted that the mother repeatedly struck the girl with a tree branch and then dragged her back home. Upon returning, the mother placed the unresponsive child inside a sack and took her to Lamitan District Hospital. Sadly, the girl was declared dead on arrival.
Legal Action and Community Response
Police apprehended the mother, who now faces parricide charges under Republic Act 7610. This law offers special protection to children against abuse, exploitation, and discrimination. Local officials emphasize the seriousness of the case and the need for vigilance.
Brig. Gen. Romeo Macapaz, the Bangsamoro police chief, urged the public to stay alert and report any signs of child abuse to authorities immediately. “Ang mga bata ang ating kinabukasan. Dapat silang protektahan,” he said, highlighting the community’s role in safeguarding children.
This heartbreaking incident calls for a stronger commitment to protect vulnerable children from harm and ensure justice for victims.
