Filipino Climber Dies During Mount Everest Climbing Season
A 45-year-old Filipino tragically lost his life while attempting to summit Mount Everest in Nepal during this year’s climbing season. This incident marks the first recorded death of a foreign climber in the current Mount Everest climbing season.
Identified as Philipp “PJ” Santiago II, the Filipino climber reached Camp 4 on May 14, situated at an elevation of 26,000 feet, as he prepared for the final ascent to the summit, which stands at 29,031 feet. Unfortunately, Santiago passed away late at night after arriving at this high-altitude camp.

A managing director of a local trekking company explained that the exact cause of Santiago’s death remains unknown. Efforts are ongoing to safely bring his body back to the base camp for recovery. Santiago was part of an expedition organized by the Mountaineering Association of Krishnanagar, aiming for the 2025 Everest expedition.
Other Fatalities Reported in This Mount Everest Climbing Season
Aside from Santiago’s tragic death, two Sherpa support staff members also fell ill at the Everest base camp. They were evacuated and admitted to a hospital, where they later died despite medical treatment. These incidents highlight the extreme risks involved in high-altitude climbing during the Mount Everest climbing season.
