Murder Complaint Filed Against Charlie Atong Ang and Others
A murder and serious illegal detention complaint has been formally filed against businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang before the Department of Justice (DOJ) in connection with the disappearance of several sabungeros. Relatives of these missing cockfighting enthusiasts have expressed cautious optimism, hoping the case gains momentum after years of waiting.
Alongside Ang, members of the so-called “Alpha Group” and certain Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel are also named in the complaint. “We are happy. We have waited four years for this,” said Ryan Bautista, brother of one of the missing sabungeros, Michael Bautista.
Charlene Lasco, sister of Ricardo Lasco, another missing sabungero, urged the DOJ to thoroughly review the case. “Our request is for them (DOJ) to carefully study and investigate the case to find probable cause and have a basis to issue a warrant as soon as possible,” she said.
Continuing Investigation Despite Complaint
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla emphasized that the filing of the complaint marks only the beginning. “There are John and Jane Does in the complaint. It is for us to fill in the blanks and ascertain their participation,” he explained.
Remulla acknowledged the investigation will be lengthy. “It is just right that the DOJ probably starts sifting through the statements made by the witnesses and the complainants to know what really happened. This will be a long process. We need to be patient,” he added.
Whistleblowers and Evidence Behind Complaint
The complaint’s foundation lies in the affidavit of whistleblower Julie “Dondon” Patidongan. “It is rare to have a highly-placed witness embedded in a criminal organization. I believe this is the first time in Philippine history that we have a whistleblower for the actions of a criminal organization,” the Justice Secretary noted.
Another key witness, Elakim Patidongan, reportedly withdrew money from the bank account of missing sabungero Melbert Santos. He is said to have witnessed the killings of 10 individuals, and his statement is included in the complaint.
Remulla assured the public that due process will be strictly observed. “We will be fair. We won’t condemn anyone without a proper hearing. Due process is essential — no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law.”
Alleged Alpha Group Members and Ongoing Inquiry
Shortly after the complaint was filed, a leaked list purportedly based on Patidongan’s affidavit circulated on social media. The document named alleged members of the “Alpha Group,” including police officials, lawmakers, and local government figures.
“We are still thoroughly looking into that,” Remulla said, indicating that three or four Alpha Group members might be involved in the plot against the sabungeros.
Meanwhile, Ang has denied all allegations. He filed a counter-complaint against former employees Dondon Patidongan and Alan Bantiles for grave threats, grave coercion, slander, conspiracy to commit attempted robbery, and falsely incriminating innocent persons.
