NAIA Team Cracks Down on Erring PUV Drivers
MANILA – The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) team continues its strict enforcement against erring public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers around the country’s main gateway. Through random inspections, the NAIA team cracks down on erring PUV drivers to ensure passenger safety and fare compliance.
On Wednesday alone, the team inspected at least 41 vehicles including taxis and motorcycle taxis operating near NAIA Terminal 3. The Land Transportation Office (LTO) reported that two PUVs received violation tickets for expired registrations and were subsequently impounded.
Composite Team Strengthens Airport Enforcement
The composite team includes personnel from the LTO, Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), Airport Police Department (APD), Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), and the Philippine National Police (PNP) Aviation Security Group. More LTO officers have been deployed to boost random inspections, aiming to address drivers who overcharge passengers promptly.
“We are making NAIA and its surroundings a ‘discipline zone,’ and the deployment of our personnel will ensure drivers comply with regulations,” said LTO chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II.
Increased Patrols to Protect Passengers
MIAA General Manager Eric Ines also confirmed plans to augment the 45 personnel assigned to patrol the airport vicinity. This move supports the crackdown on violations and illegal activities by some PUV drivers.
For instance, on June 27, a motorcycle taxi driver’s license was suspended for reportedly charging PHP2,000 for a trip from NAIA Terminal 3 to Cainta, Rizal. Earlier this year, on January 25, 11 PUV drivers were apprehended for illegal passenger contracting and franchise violations.
24/7 Operations for Continuous Monitoring
These arrests and inspections are part of the intensified efforts by the composite team, formed on June 22, which operates around the clock to enforce transport regulations effectively. Local authorities said the continuous presence of enforcement teams is vital to maintain order and protect commuters at NAIA.
Passengers can expect safer and more regulated transport services as the NAIA team cracks down on erring PUV drivers more consistently.
