Napolcom Pushes Scholarship Programs for Police Families
MANILA, Philippines — The National Police Commission (Napolcom) is advancing scholarship programs for police officers and their families after the recent deaths of two patrolmen during separate operations. This initiative aims to support those who serve and protect, acknowledging the risks they face daily.
The call for scholarship programs for police families follows the tragic deaths of Pat. Mark Ornopia Sr. in Danao City, Cebu, and Pat. Curtney Baggay in Quezon City. Ornopia was killed last Friday during a snatching incident, while Baggay lost his life responding to a robbery last Monday.
Scholarship Programs for Police Families: Boosting Morale and Welfare
“My goal is to uplift the morale and welfare of the police force by establishing scholarship programs not only for the families of fallen or wounded officers but also for those still serving,” said Napolcom Vice Chairperson Rafael Calinisan. He emphasized the importance of education and support to empower policemen and women.
Calinisan also welcomed collaboration with private institutions that share this goal, stating, “We invite partnerships with organizations willing to help our men and women in uniform through educational opportunities and meaningful assistance.”
Details of the Fatal Incidents
Ornopia was fatally shot after pursuing a homeless man who had snatched a security guard’s service firearm at a pawnshop along P. Del Pilar Street in Barangay Poblacion, Danao City. Meanwhile, Baggay was killed while responding to a robbery where a vendor was under attack in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City.
“This stark reality shows that a policeman’s life is constantly at risk, often with one foot already in danger,” Calinisan reflected solemnly.
