Napolcom Stands Firm Against Sabungeros Case Influence
MANILA, Philippines — The National Police Commission (Napolcom) has issued a strong warning to groups attempting to sway its probe into the alleged involvement of police officers in the abduction of at least 34 cockfighting enthusiasts, known locally as sabungeros. The commission emphasized its commitment to an impartial investigation without interference.
Napolcom Vice Chairperson and Executive Officer Rafael Calinisan revealed in a press statement that two groups are trying to influence the agency’s investigation. He identified these groups only as a “sabong boss” and a “local government executive.”
Calinisan declared, “I won’t allow it. We will not arrange a settlement. Perhaps, my only message to the two groups: don’t try it. The president’s orders are clear in that there will be no cover-ups, no stone unturned.” He further stressed, “We in Napolcom will not allow ourselves to be influenced by whomever. We are not afraid. We will not back down.”
Whistleblower Sparks Probe Into Police Roles
The investigation traces back to whistleblower Julie “Dondon” Patidongan, also known as Totoy, who came forward in June with claims implicating police officers in the kidnapping and deaths of sabungeros. His statements aired on GMA News prompted Napolcom to launch a motu proprio inquiry that same month.
On July 14, Patidongan filed a formal complaint against 12 active-duty police officers and six previously dismissed officers. These charges relate to their alleged roles in the abductions and killings, according to sources close to the matter.
Search Efforts Continue at Taal Lake
Meanwhile, efforts to locate the missing sabungeros continue. Philippine Coast Guard personnel deployed a remotely operated vehicle in Taal Lake, Laurel, Batangas, on July 15 to assist technical divers in the search and retrieval operations. Local leaders noted the urgency and importance of this mission amid the ongoing investigation.
Napolcom remains resolute in conducting a thorough, unbiased investigation. The commission’s firm stance reflects the president’s directive to ensure transparency and justice for the victims and their families.
