Navy Divers Ready to Search Missing Sabungeros in Taal Lake
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Navy announced that its technical divers are prepared to assist in the search for the 34 missing cockfighting enthusiasts, locally known as “sabungeros,” who are believed to have been disposed of in Taal Lake. This development comes after one of the suspects, nicknamed “Totoy,” revealed the alleged burial site during a recent interview.
“Your Philippine Navy is always ready to assist other government agencies for the welfare of our fellow countrymen,” said Navy spokesperson Capt. John Percie Alcos in Filipino during a Friday interview in Manila. He emphasized that once the Navy receives an official request, the Special Operations Command will deploy its technical divers, who possess the right skills and equipment for underwater search operations.
Technical Divers to Support Search Efforts
Capt. Alcos reassured the public that the Navy’s technical divers are fully equipped for the task. “Most likely, once we receive notice or a request from other government agencies in this particular case, we will refer this to the Navy Special Operations Command because our technical divers are there,” he added.
This move aligns with Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla’s recent announcement that the Navy and the Philippine Coast Guard’s technical divers will be tapped to aid in locating the missing sabungeros. Authorities are intensifying efforts following the suspect’s claim about the victims’ burial location in Taal Lake.
Coordinated Efforts Among Agencies
The Philippine National Police remains vigilant, prepared to protect suspects involved, as investigations continue. Local officials and government agencies are coordinating closely to ensure a thorough and swift search operation.
The tragedy has drawn significant attention from various sectors, highlighting the need for a united government response. The involvement of the Navy’s specialized divers offers hope for recovering the missing individuals and providing closure to their families.
