Authorities Deploy Navy, PCG Divers for Taal Lake Search
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Justice (DOJ) is considering enlisting the expertise of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Philippine Navy to verify reports about the 34 missing sabungeros, or cockfighting enthusiasts. These individuals are believed to have perished, with their remains allegedly dumped in Taal Lake, Batangas.
This development comes after one of six security guards accused of abducting the sabungeros disclosed this information. The DOJ aims to confirm the validity of these claims through a thorough underwater search.
Technical Divers Needed for Deep Freshwater Search
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla explained that technical divers from both the PCG and the Navy might be necessary. “We’re still working on it, but we’re also trying to bring in the Coast Guard, including their diving team, as well as the Navy,” Remulla said in an interview.
He added, “Because this involves deep diving. It’s freshwater, so we really need technical divers to handle it properly.” The search demands specialized skills due to the lake’s depth and conditions.
Verifying the Claims Through Underwater Recovery
The divers’ mission would be to locate and recover remains, thereby verifying the authenticity of the information concerning the missing sabungeros. Remulla emphasized that this step is crucial before further actions can be taken.
Interestingly, the justice chief mentioned that he had been in contact with the security guard who revealed the information even before the recent elections. “Actually, I already know the witness being referred to, I’ve known them for a long time. I spoke with them even before the elections, so I have a very good idea of what he’s talking about,” he stated.
Community and Authorities Await Confirmation
Local leaders and authorities remain on high alert as the search efforts intensify. The involvement of the Navy and PCG divers marks a significant escalation in the investigation surrounding the disappearance of the sabungeros.
