Six Arrested for Illegal Quarrying in Rizal
Authorities have cracked down on illegal mining activities, as the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) arrested six individuals involved in unauthorized mineral extraction in Morong, Rizal. The arrests took place on August 11, following reports of unlawful quarrying operations in the area.
Officials reported that the suspects were conducting illegal quarrying without the necessary permits and clearances from the Provincial Mining Regulatory Board of Rizal Province and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Minews and Geosciences Bureau Region IV-A (DENR-MGB). This illegal activity has raised concerns among environmental watchdogs and local authorities.
Surveillance Confirms Illegal Operations
After receiving complaints, the DENR-MGB and the Provincial Mining Regulatory Board carried out thorough surveillance and verification. Their investigation confirmed the presence of illegal quarrying activities within Morong, Rizal. Community members noted that these operations were damaging the local environment and violating mining regulations.
Suspects and Evidence Uncovered
The NBI arrested six suspects identified as Armando Oriñas, John Robert Gonzales, Erven Icalabis, Rodel Briones, Alexander Catan, and Nestor Cadavez. These individuals were reportedly operating heavy equipment such as backhoes and dump trucks used for quarrying.
Evidence found linked the quarrying operation to Efsiaca Construction Supplies Trading, a business owned by Randy Molod Efsiaca. However, officials confirmed that no valid quarry permit or transport and hauling permit was issued by the Provincial Government of Rizal to Mr. Efsiaca.
Seizure of Equipment and Legal Proceedings
During the raid, authorities seized two dump trucks and two backhoes. The equipment’s estimated value is approximately ₱5,025,000. The confiscation aims to halt further illegal extraction activities and serves as a warning to others involved in unauthorized mining.
The suspects are set to undergo a summary investigation before the Office of the Prosecutor General. This step will determine the appropriate charges and ensure accountability for the illegal quarrying offenses.
