NBI Director Jaime Santiago Files Resignation
National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) director Jaime Santiago has tendered his irrevocable resignation on August 15, 2025, citing an orchestrated campaign aimed at tarnishing his reputation, officials reported. This sudden departure came as a shock to many, especially those who witnessed his commitment to justice and human rights.
Spokespersons and legal representatives expressed sadness over the resignation of the NBI chief. Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP) spokesperson Atty. Ferdinand Topacio highlighted Santiago’s compassionate and humane treatment of clients, including those facing serious charges.
Compassionate Leadership Amid Challenges
Topacio noted that Santiago treated his clients, such as Cassandra Li Ong and former congressman Arnolfo Teves, with respect and adherence to the fundamental principles of human rights. Ong faces qualified human trafficking charges linked to the illegal operations of the now-banned Philippine offshore gaming operator Lucky South 99 Corp. in Porac, Pampanga.
Meanwhile, Arnolfo Teves remains detained at the NBI facility inside New Bilibid Prison. He is confronted with 31 cases, including murder, attempted murder, terrorism financing, and illegal possession of firearms and explosives, community members said.
Esteemed Reputation in the Marcos Administration
Topacio described Santiago as one of the few remaining decent elements in the current administration. “I am on record as saying that Dir. Santiago is truly one of the few shining stars in the present universe of the Marcos administration, inhabited abundantly by black holes and dying planets,” the lawyer expressed.
Having known Santiago since his days as a regional trial court judge, Topacio affirmed the NBI chief’s unassailable reputation for integrity and professionalism. As director of the NBI, Santiago consistently upheld the highest standards expected of public servants, treating everyone he encountered with dignity and fairness.
Anti-Corruption Efforts Highlighted in Resignation
In his resignation letter addressed to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Santiago underscored the agency’s ongoing anti-corruption initiatives during his tenure. He cited the relief of a special task force due to irregularities and the arrest of a Pampanga mayor and a former Albay councilor on extortion charges as evidence of the agency’s commitment to accountability.
Palace officials confirmed Santiago’s resignation on Saturday, acknowledging the director’s decision and the reasons he presented. The move leaves many wondering about the future direction of the NBI and its role within the current administration.
Legacy of Jaime Santiago
Despite the challenges he faced, Santiago’s tenure at the NBI was marked by efforts to maintain transparency and uphold justice. His departure sparks concern among legal circles and human rights advocates who viewed him as a stalwart defender of due process.
Local leaders and community members mourn the loss of a leader who showed compassion even in difficult circumstances. As the NBI transitions to new leadership, many hope that Santiago’s principles will continue to inspire the agency.
