NCR Sprinters Lead the 2025 Palarong Pambansa
LAOAG CITY — The 2025 Palarong Pambansa showcased the finest sprinters from the National Capital Region (NCR) as they delivered a commanding performance that reinforced their total control of the overall standings. The national sports event, held at the Ferdinand E. Marcos Memorial Stadium, saw remarkable feats in track and field, especially from the NCR athletes.
Among the highlights, Pi Durden Wangkay and Jeralyn Rodriguez stood out as the fastest runners in their categories. Wangkay, whose father was a former national athlete, clocked an impressive 10.82 seconds to win the secondary boys 100-meter dash. He edged out silver medalist Kian Labar from Western Visayas by a slim margin.
In the girls’ 100-meter race, Rodriguez clinched her third gold medal with a time of 12.05 seconds. She outpaced teammate Lhynette Libranda and Western Visayas’ Angel Villagracia, who finished second and third respectively. Their victories contributed significantly to NCR’s effort to defend their Palaro title for the 18th consecutive year, as they currently lead with 71 golds, 50 silvers, and 27 bronzes.
Unexpected Basketball Setback for NCR
Despite the sprinting triumphs, the NCR basketball team faced a surprising defeat that dampened the celebrations. The secondary boys 5-on-5 basketball team lost 76-67 to Western Visayas at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena. The game was tied at 56-all before Western Visayas pulled away with a decisive 20-11 run, securing their spot in the semifinals and ending NCR’s chances in the competition.
Record-Breaking Performances Across Events
Beyond sprinting and basketball, the Palarong Pambansa witnessed several historic achievements. Sam Garcia from CALABARZON set a new elementary girls shot put record by throwing 12.48 meters, surpassing a 29-year-old mark established in 1996.
Other athletes also shattered records, including Mico Villaran of Western Visayas in the secondary boys 110m hurdles, Ana Espinilla from Bicol in the secondary girls javelin throw, Alfred Talplacido of Central Luzon in the secondary boys 400m, and Josh Salcedo of Western Visayas in the discus throw.
In archery, Chass Colas from the Cordillera Administrative Region demonstrated exceptional skill by breaking two records over two days, bringing home three gold medals.
The 2025 Palarong Pambansa continues to highlight the immense talent and competitive spirit of young Filipino athletes. These performances reflect the dedication and hard work of the participants and their communities.
