NDRRMC Raises Alert Status for Tropical Depression Crising

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) escalated the alert status to red for Tropical Depression Crising early Thursday. This important move signals the urgency of preparations amid the storm’s approach.

According to the council’s latest advisory, Memorandum No. 170, series of 2025, was issued to upgrade the alert from Blue to Red Alert effective at noon on July 17, 2025. This step ensures that relevant agencies are fully mobilized.

“The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operations Center raised the Alert Status from BLUE to RED ICOW Tropical Depression CRISING East of Juban Sorsogon effective 17 July 2025, 12:00 NN,” the NDRRMC reported.

Mobilizing Government Agencies for Response

The council directed detailed duty officers and technical staff from several key agencies to be present at the NDRRM Operations Center. These include the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Coast Guard, and the Philippine National Police. Weather updates are provided by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Other departments involved are the Interior and Local Government, Social Welfare and Development, Agriculture, Public Works and Highways, Education, and Health. Their combined efforts will focus on preparedness and response.

Current Status and Path of Tropical Depression Crising

Pagasa’s 11 a.m. weather bulletin placed Tropical Depression Crising 520 kilometers east-northeast of Juban, Sorsogon, and 470 kilometers east-northeast of Virac, Catanduanes. The storm maintains maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 70 kph.

Moving north-northwest at 25 kilometers per hour, Crising continues to pose a risk to eastern and northern provinces.

Areas Under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1

Several regions are now under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1. These include the southern part of Batanes—Sabtang, Ivana, Uyugan, Mahatao, and Basco. Cagayan province, including the Babuyan Islands, Isabela, Quirino, and northeastern Nueva Vizcaya towns like Kasibu and Quezon, are also affected.

Northern Aurora municipalities such as Dilasag and Casiguran, as well as provinces Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, and Ifugao, are included. Ilocos Norte and northern areas of Ilocos Sur also face possible impacts.

In the Bicol region, northern and eastern parts of Catanduanes, including Pandan and Bagamanoc, remain on alert.

Local leaders noted that heavy rains may cause swelling rivers and flooding, as has happened in past storms. Rescue teams stand ready to assist families in vulnerable communities.
