Massive Police Deployment for BARMM Elections
Nearly 10,000 police personnel will be deployed across the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to secure the upcoming elections on October 13, officials reported. The large-scale deployment aims to ensure a peaceful and orderly voting process in the region.
During a recent briefing, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III confirmed the deployment and emphasized that the nearly 10,000 police deployed will be stationed in various towns and municipalities, especially in those areas classified as high-risk.
Gun Ban Enforced Throughout Election Period
Alongside the police deployment, a strict gun ban is already in effect in BARMM, running from August 14 until October 28. This period covers the entire election season to help maintain public safety and reduce violence, community members said.
Gen. Torre explained, “As part of the preparations for the 2025 BARMM elections, the PNP has deployed almost 10,000 personnel in various parts of the region. At the same time, based on the Comelec resolution, we will implement the gun ban from August 14 to October 28.”
Areas of Grave Concern Receive Focused Security
The deployment targets 94 out of 108 towns and municipalities in BARMM, which were designated as areas of grave concern or red areas by election authorities. Local leaders noted that the concentration of security forces in these zones aims to deter election-related violence and intimidation.
Restrictions Under the Gun Ban
During the gun ban, the Commission on Elections prohibits several activities without prior exemption. These include carrying firearms or deadly weapons in public, even by licensed owners, community members said.
- Bearing or carrying firearms or other deadly weapons in public places
- Hiring or engaging security personnel or bodyguards
- Transporting or delivering firearms, ammunition, components, and explosives
Additionally, permits such as Permits to Carry Firearms Outside of Residence, Letter Orders, and Mission Orders are suspended and invalid during the gun ban period, unless a Certificate of Authority is issued by the Gun Ban and Security Concerns Committee.
Consequences for Violators
Election officials warned that violating the gun ban may result in severe penalties. Offenders could face imprisonment from one to six years without probation. They may also be disqualified from holding public office and lose their right to vote. Foreigners found violating the ban risk deportation after serving their prison sentence, sources said.
Ensuring Peaceful BARMM Elections
The combined efforts of the nearly 10,000 police deployed and the strict gun ban reflect a comprehensive strategy to safeguard the electoral process in BARMM. Authorities remain vigilant in maintaining peace and order as the region approaches its crucial 2025 elections.
