Negros Bishop Condemns Supreme Court’s Sara Duterte Impeachment Decision
BACOLOD CITY — Bishop Gerardo Alminaza of San Carlos Diocese on Negros Island voiced profound sadness and anger over the Supreme Court’s ruling that halted the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. He called the decision a “betrayal” to the nation’s pursuit of truth and justice.
“It feels like a betrayal — not just of the legal process, but of the people’s longing for truth and justice,” Alminaza wrote in a pastoral letter urging for “justice and accountability.” His message reached his diocese, which covers several cities and towns across Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental.
Core Issues Remain Despite Legal Technicalities
Alminaza stressed that although the Supreme Court’s decision was grounded on technical grounds, the fundamental issue remains: public funds were misused. He highlighted that the poorest sectors—families devastated by floods, students unable to attend schools, and farmers and workers losing their livelihoods—are the ones who suffer the most.
“Once again, the powerful are protected, truth is delayed and the cries of the people are silenced,” the bishop lamented. He warned officials across government branches that “God and the people are watching them,” emphasizing that their lack of courage and transparency reflects a troubling pattern, clearly seen by the nation.
Alminaza urged citizens to remain vigilant and keep their passion for justice burning. He also called on the church community—including parishes, leaders, schools, lay groups, youth, and civic organizations—to unite in raising their voices. Their goal is not only to hold Sara Duterte accountable but also to foster a culture of truth and responsibility in the country.
Local Groups Rally Against Supreme Court Ruling
On the same day, Bayan-Negros, a militant group, announced plans for a large protest on Monday, July 28. The demonstration will coincide with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s State of the Nation Address and oppose the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision that bars any impeachment trial against the Vice President until February 6, 2026.
Bayan-Negros called on Negros residents to join the protest, stating, “to make clear that we reject a regime built on impunity, corruption, and foreign control.” The group said participants will gather at 1 p.m. near the Capitol Park and Lagoon on South Capitol Road in Bacolod City. They will then march to Bacolod City Plaza for a rally starting at 1:30 p.m.
The organization criticized the Supreme Court’s ruling as “a political shield masquerading as legal procedure.” They added, “From Marcos Jr.’s public indifference, to the Senate’s deliberate stalling, and now the SC’s legal gymnastics, every institution has closed ranks to preserve the status quo.”
Local leaders noted that this move deepens public distrust and highlights the urgent need for genuine accountability. The voices calling for justice remain strong despite setbacks.
