Negros Occidental Explores Permanent Relocation Sites
BACOLOD CITY — The provincial government of Negros Occidental is actively evaluating two properties in Barangay Talaptap, La Castellana town, as permanent relocation sites for residents displaced by the unrest surrounding Mt. Kanlaon. This initiative aims to provide a safe and stable community for those affected by the volcanic activity.
Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz said the government will base its purchase decision on the acceptability of these relocation sites by the displaced residents and local officials. “This is to ensure that the evacuees will stay at the new site and not return to their homes in Mt. Kanlaon’s six-kilometer danger zone,” Diaz explained.
Properties Under Consideration
Two parcels of land are currently under review: one measuring eight hectares and another spanning 11 hectares. Diaz highlighted that the larger property is ideally situated near the Talaptap barangay hall and a local school, making it a practical choice for permanent relocation.
“The displaced La Castellana residents cannot be brought to evacuation centers outside of the town because that would be far from their livelihoods and the schools of their children,” Diaz added, emphasizing the importance of proximity to daily necessities.
Next Steps for Relocation
The owners of the Talaptap properties will soon submit formal letter offers. Following this, the provincial government will dispatch an appraisal committee to evaluate the land’s value. If the properties meet the approval of both the affected residents and the local government, the province will proceed with the acquisition process.
Meanwhile, the government continues to provide food assistance to evacuees housed in temporary camps within local schools in La Castellana. This support remains critical as authorities work toward securing permanent housing solutions.
