Barangay Official Alleges Assault by Politician’s Nephew
CEBU CITY — The nephew of former Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes is facing serious allegations after a late-night assault on a barangay official on June 3. Noel Quemque Flores, a councilor from Barangay Alang-Alang, reported the incident to local police Station 1 that same afternoon.
Flores identified his alleged attacker as Ian Luigi Cortes, who is also known as the nephew of the former mayor and had recently lost in the midterm mayoral race. The barangay councilor said he was at home resting when he received a call from Ian around 12:50 a.m.
Unexpected Meeting Turns Violent
Ian asked Flores to meet him outside his residence on S.B. Cabahug Street for a talk. Believing this could be a chance to resolve their differences, Flores agreed. However, upon stepping outside, Flores was met with an unexpected and hostile confrontation. Ian accused him of being “arrogant and boastful,” sparking tension between the two.
Suddenly, another man on a motorcycle arrived and struck Flores at the back of his head with a helmet. As Flores tried to defend himself, Ian joined in, delivering several punches. The attack left Flores shaken and led him to file a formal complaint with the authorities.
Authorities and Community React
Local police have accepted the complaint and are investigating the incident. Ian Luigi Cortes has yet to issue a statement regarding the accusations. Community leaders expressed concern about the violence involving public officials and called for peaceful resolution of political disputes.
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions in local politics and the need for dialogue over conflict. Flores hopes that justice will be served and that such acts of violence will not happen again in the barangay.
