OWWA Launches New Reintegration Program for OFWs
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) has unveiled a new reintegration program designed to open doors for returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector. This initiative, developed in partnership with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), aims to create employment opportunities tailored to the growing demand for ICT professionals.
Training Focuses on Cybersecurity and Digital Skills
During a recent Senate hearing, DICT Secretary Henry Aguda highlighted that the program will provide training in key areas such as cybersecurity, computer programming, and social media management. He emphasized the country’s urgent need for skilled workers in these fields, which have seen a shortage despite rapid digital growth.
“Hindi kailangan ng college degree. Pwede po siyang diploma program together with Tesda,” Secretary Aguda explained, assuring that the program welcomes participants without prior IT experience or formal college education. He also mentioned that trainees could receive allowances while completing their courses, making the program accessible and supportive.
Comprehensive Support for Returning OFWs
Officials reported that the DMW and OWWA, mandated by Republic Act No. 11641 to deliver full-cycle reintegration services, have long supported returning OFWs through various financial aids, livelihood grants, and job placements. These efforts include allocating P3.5 million in emergency funds for workers in distress and distributing starter kits to 73 returnees.
Additionally, community members noted the success of recent job fairs, which resulted in over 1,800 hires. The agencies utilize advanced tools like the Returnee-OFWs Management Information System and Reintegration Management System to better match skills with job opportunities, ensuring a smoother transition for workers back into the local workforce.
Building a Future in ICT for OFWs
This reintegration program reflects a strategic response to the evolving job market and the need to equip returning OFWs with competitive skills in the ICT sector. By offering accessible training and employment pathways, the government hopes to empower Filipino workers and contribute to the country’s digital economy.
Local leaders expressed optimism that this initiative will not only provide immediate job opportunities but also foster long-term career growth for many OFWs returning home.
