New Siquijor Diesel Power Plants Promise Relief
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced on September 5, 2025, that the New Siquijor Diesel Power Plants will significantly reduce brownouts and offer a lasting solution to the province’s persistent power crisis. This move aims to improve electricity supply and stabilize the energy situation in Siquijor.
Marcos explained that the government had to assume control over the operations of Siquijor Island Power Corporation (SIPCOR) due to its failure to enhance power service. “We have to take over the operations of SIPCOR for the simple reason that we are not seeing any improvement in their provision of electricity supply, so that’s what happened,” he said. Local officials noted that SIPCOR, owned by the Villar group, had been flagged for poor service quality in the Central Visayas island.
Details of the Power Plant Facilities
The president led the ceremonial activation of the new power facilities at the Province of Siquijor Electric Cooperative (PROSIELCO) headquarters in Larena town. The combined capacity of these diesel power plants totals 17.8 megawatts (MW), distributed across three locations: 4.4 MW in Larena, 6.6 MW in Lazi, and 6.8 MW in Siquijor town.
Officials reported that the National Electrification Administration (NEA) and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), working under the Department of Energy, collaborated to ensure PROSIELCO would operate the plants. “The National Electrification Administration (NEA) and the ERC worked on it, but of course, under the Department of Energy, they worked so that PROSIELCO would operate it. And after that, we will continue, and we’ll see that the service of providing electricity will be better,” Marcos added.
Fast-Tracked Response to Power Shortages
The construction of these power plants was expedited after the ERC revoked SIPCOR’s authority due to multiple violations amid ongoing power shortages. Community members expressed relief as the new facilities are expected to stabilize electricity supply and reduce frequent outages that have long affected daily life and local businesses.
Back in June, Marcos promised to resolve Siquijor’s power crisis within six months. This initiative marks a concrete step toward fulfilling that commitment and enhancing the province’s energy reliability.
Collaborative Effort to Boost Economic Growth
The new diesel power plants were built through a partnership among the NEA, PROSIELCO, Cebu Electric Cooperative I and III, and other key stakeholders. Local leaders believe this collaboration will not only improve power supply but also drive Siquijor’s economic development by providing a more dependable energy foundation.
With the new infrastructure in place, residents and businesses can expect a more stable power source, which is essential for growth and quality of life improvements in the province.
