NFA Rice Program Rolls Out in Bacolod City
Bacolod City has begun receiving sacks of rice as part of the National Food Authority’s (NFA) P20-per-kilo rice program. Deliveries started on June 4, one day before the program’s official launch. Local leaders noted this initiative aims to provide affordable rice to residents across the city.
According to city officials, the NFA rice program will see between 400 and 700 sacks delivered daily during its initial phase. The Bacolod City Government set aside P7.9 million to purchase 5,880 sacks for the first batch. This rice is freshly milled and sourced directly from farms processed in certified rice mills in Valladolid, Negros Occidental.
Storage and Distribution Plans
The rice will be stored safely at the Bacolod City Government Center or in city-accredited warehouses instead of NFA facilities. To ensure smooth distribution, the city’s 41 numbered barangays and 20 named villages will be grouped into clusters. This method aims to organize the delivery process and help reach beneficiaries efficiently.
Target Beneficiaries and Purchase Limits
The program prioritizes vulnerable groups such as solo parents, persons with disabilities (PWDs), senior citizens, and indigent families. Each household is allowed to buy up to 10 kilos of rice at the subsidized price. Assigned personnel will monitor purchases closely, issuing purchase slips to maintain transparency and accountability.
Launch Event and Support
The official launch of the NFA rice program in Bacolod is set for June 5 at the Burgos Public Market. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. is expected to attend the event. Local leaders expressed optimism that this program will ease rice costs for many families in the city.
