No Contact Apprehension Policy Gears Up Expansion
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is set to boost the No Contact Apprehension Policy with the installation of approximately 1,200 new cameras by the end of 2025. This expansion aims to strengthen traffic enforcement across Metro Manila.
Motorists passing through key intersections, such as Edsa and Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City, are already reminded that the no-contact apprehension policy is active again. The MMDA resumed this program in May to help alleviate the city’s persistent traffic congestion.
“Our installation of more cameras is ongoing. Hopefully, within the year, these more-or-less 1,200 cameras will be installed for us to use for NCAP,” MMDA Chairperson Don Artes said during a recent interview with local reporters.
Fiber Optic Installation Hurdles Progress
Artes explained that the main challenge slowing the camera rollout involves the installation of fiber optic cables. “We no longer use wireless broadband because the feed can lag. You saw that our cameras are so clear, it’s not pixelizing because of the fiber optic,” he added.
Current Camera Deployment and Future Plans
At a Senate hearing earlier this month, MMDA Traffic Enforcement Group Director Victor Nuñez reported that only about 350 CCTV cameras are currently operational for the no contact apprehension policy. Nuñez also highlighted plans to integrate artificial intelligence into these cameras to improve traffic policy enforcement.
The move to employ AI-powered CCTV cameras reflects the agency’s commitment to modernize traffic management and enhance compliance without direct physical interaction.
For motorists, this means stricter monitoring with clearer imaging, helping authorities efficiently identify traffic violations while reducing human contact.
MMDA’s Commitment to Safer Roads
Local officials noted that the no contact apprehension policy supports safer, more orderly traffic conditions. With the expansion of camera coverage, they expect improved enforcement, fewer violations, and ultimately, smoother traffic flow in Metro Manila’s busiest corridors.
As the MMDA pushes forward with these upgrades, drivers are urged to stay informed about the policy and adhere to traffic rules to avoid penalties.
