Filipino Ingenuity Meets No-Contact Apprehension Policy
Filipino creativity has shown itself once again, this time in response to the No-Contact Apprehension Policy (NCAP). Some motorists have reportedly been altering their license plates in an attempt to deceive the artificial intelligence (AI) systems used by closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs) installed along major roads in Metro Manila.
However, authorities remain unimpressed by these tactics. Officials from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) have issued stern warnings, particularly to motorcycle riders, about the severe penalties for such violations.
Strict Penalties for License Plate Manipulation
Sources familiar with the matter reveal that the MMDA Traffic Discipline Office head emphasized the consequences of covering or tampering with license plates. “We admire the Filipino ingenuity but I am warning them that the penalty for this, perhaps they would be surprised, is P5,000,” the official stated.
Social media has quickly circulated photos and videos showing various methods used to avoid detection, such as covering license plates with face masks or scratching them to make the characters harder to read. Electrical tape and masking tape have also been spotted used to obscure plates.
Enforcement Efforts Against License Plate Alterations
While these tricks might temporarily fool the CCTV AI, many MMDA enforcers remain active on the streets, ready to apprehend violators. A memorandum has reportedly been issued instructing all traffic enforcers to watch closely for such attempts.
The official added, “We have been receiving these photos and videos and this only means that they have the intention to violate. But we have to remind them, this is illegal and the fine is high.”
Motorists are urged to comply with the NCAP to avoid hefty fines and legal troubles. Authorities continue to monitor and adapt to any new methods used to circumvent the system.
