No Tropical Cyclones Expected in Philippine Area of Responsibility for May
The Philippine Area of Responsibility is not expected to see any tropical cyclones enter or develop for the rest of May, according to local weather experts. This outlook brings some relief as the month progresses, with the country likely to experience varying weather patterns.
Weather specialists report that while most parts of the Philippines will enjoy generally fair weather, residents in Mindanao, the Visayas, and Palawan should prepare for rainy days ahead. These regions will continue to face scattered rains and thunderstorms, primarily due to the influence of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).
Scattered Rain Showers and Thunderstorms Persist
From May 23 to 26, the ITCZ will remain active, causing intermittent rain showers and thunderstorms across Mindanao, parts of the Visayas, and Palawan. Given the recent heavy rains, local communities are advised to stay vigilant for potential hazards such as flash floods and landslides.
Meanwhile, the rest of the country will experience warm and humid conditions, driven by easterly winds coming from the Pacific Ocean. Despite this generally dry spell, brief rain showers and localized thunderstorms could still appear, especially during the afternoons or evenings. Authorities urge the public to stay alert as these storms might also trigger sudden floods or landslides.
Rainy Season Not Yet Started
Experts explain that the rainy season has yet to begin, largely because easterly winds continue to dominate. However, meteorologists are closely monitoring the possible development of southwesterly wind flows, which might start around May 29. This shift could bring more widespread rains.
The official start of the rainy season hinges on whether these southwesterly winds are accompanied by consistent, widespread rainfall lasting at least five consecutive days. Depending on how quickly these conditions are met, the rainy season could officially begin in early June or possibly stretch into the second week of the month.
Residents are advised to keep an eye on weather updates and prepare accordingly as the transition approaches.
