No Weather Disturbance Monitored but Thunderstorms Expected Soon

No Weather Disturbance Monitored in Philippine Area

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced on Sunday, May 18, that no weather disturbances are currently being tracked within or outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). Despite this, the public should prepare for more frequent thunderstorms as the country moves deeper into the rainy season.

According to local weather experts, “So far, we are not monitoring any low pressure area or tropical cyclone inside or outside the PAR. The possibility remains quite low in the next few days.” This reassures residents that no immediate storm threats are expected.

Impact of Intertropical Convergence Zone on Weather

Even though no tropical cyclones are present, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) continues to influence the region’s weather. This zone, where northern and southern hemisphere winds meet, brings cloudy skies accompanied by scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Mindanao, Eastern Visayas, and Palawan.

The convergence of these winds can lead to flash floods and landslides, especially in areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall. Residents in these regions should stay alert and heed local advisories during periods of moderate to intense rain.

Thunderstorm Frequency and Risks Across the Country

Meanwhile, other parts of the Philippines will likely experience hot weather with occasional isolated rain showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening. These weather events are driven by easterlies, warm winds coming from the Pacific Ocean.

Thunderstorms typically last between 30 minutes to an hour but can sometimes extend up to two hours. Some may develop into severe storms, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning. These conditions increase the risk of localized flooding and landslides, particularly in flood-prone and mountainous areas.

Local authorities urge communities to remain vigilant and prepare accordingly to minimize the impact of these weather changes.
