Toll Suspension on Northern Luzon Expressway Begins Sunday
MANILA, Philippines — Starting Sunday, motorists traveling on the northbound portion of the Northern Luzon Expressway (NLEX) from Balintawak to Meycauayan will experience a toll suspension. This measure comes as repair works begin on the Marilao overpass bridge.
The NLEX Corporation announced on Saturday that the toll suspension will be effective from 1 a.m. on June 22 until midnight on June 23. They assured the public that traffic management strategies will be implemented to ease the flow and reduce inconvenience during repair activities.
“Appropriate traffic management measures will be in place to minimize motorists’ inconvenience while works are expeditiously undertaken. We ask for the motoring public’s patience and understanding,” local officials shared.
Bridge Damage Prompts Toll Suspension
This toll suspension follows a directive from the Department of Transportation (DOTr) aimed at preventing severe traffic congestion in the Marilao area while bridge repairs are underway.
Last Wednesday, a tragic accident occurred when an 18-wheel cargo truck struck the underside of the Marilao overpass bridge. The impact caused a girder to collapse onto a vehicle on the NLEX northbound lane, resulting in one death and injuring six others, sources said.
The Marilao bridge had already suffered damage in March, leading to the closure of two northbound lanes for about a week to allow repair works. The recent incident has made further repairs necessary, prompting the current toll suspension.
Ensuring Motorist Safety and Traffic Flow
NLEX officials emphasized their commitment to both motorist safety and the swift completion of repairs. They urge drivers to stay alert and follow traffic advisories during the suspension period.
Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and coordinate with traffic enforcers to maintain order on the expressway. Motorists are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly and anticipate possible delays as the bridge undergoes restoration.
