Deadly Clash with NPA Central Negros 2 Front in Himamaylan
In a tense encounter on Friday afternoon, the Philippine Army’s 94th Infantry Battalion engaged members of the New People’s Army Central Negros 2 front in the remote areas of Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental. This clash resulted in the death of a squad member identified as Jun-Jun “Gringo” Benoy, 24, from Sitio Ompocon, Barangay Mahalang. The operation was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle remaining rebel groups in the region.
Soldiers acted on reports of armed rebel presence and confronted around five insurgents in Sitio Bugtangan, Barangay Buenavista, at approximately 4:30 p.m. After intense fighting, troops recovered an M16 rifle along with personal effects left behind by the rebels.
Army Commends Community Cooperation
The 3rd Infantry Division’s commander, Major General Michael Samson, praised the strong cooperation between military forces and local communities. He emphasized that such partnerships are vital in the campaign to neutralize communist insurgents and prevent them from regaining strength in Negros.
“This combat operation is part of our ongoing drive to cripple the remaining elements of the communist-terrorist group and ensure that they do not regain strength in Negros,” Samson stated. He urged the remaining NPA fighters to surrender and take advantage of the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program.
Call for Rebels to Return to Peace
The military continues to encourage insurgents to abandon armed struggle and reintegrate into society. Local leaders noted that peace and development efforts rely heavily on the safe return of rebels, which also enhances community security and growth.
As the conflict persists, the government reiterates its commitment to ending violence through both military operations and community-based solutions. The recent incident marks another step toward stabilizing Negros Occidental and improving the lives of its residents.
