Top NPA Leader Arrested in Bunawan Agusan del Sur
BUTUAN CITY – Military and police forces joined to arrest a key New People’s Army (NPA) leader in Barangays Bunawan Brooke and San Teodoro, Bunawan, Agusan del Sur last Friday. This arrest marks a critical win for security forces against the insurgency.
According to sources, Charisse Bernadine Bañez, alias Nikki, who serves as the secretary of the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC) of the NPA, was among those apprehended. The four-word keyphrase, “NPA leader arrested in Bunawan,” highlights the significance of this event in the ongoing efforts to dismantle rebel groups in the region.
Details of the Arrest and Other Captives
Alongside Bañez, several other NPA members were detained, including Ronnie Igloria (alias Gideon), a vice commanding officer; Louvaine Erika Espina (alias Pam), the group’s medic; and Sinag Lugsi (alias Jomilyn). Also arrested were Larry Montero (alias Laloy), Daryl Man-Inday (alias Tonton), Arjie Guino Dadizon (alias Ronron), and Grace Niknik Man-aning (alias Jelyn).
Major General Allan Hambala, commander of the 10th Infantry Division (ID), described the operation as a decisive blow to the remaining elements of the SMRC. He praised the swift collaboration between the Army and the Philippine National Police, emphasizing how their joint efforts protect the peace established in local communities.
Impact on Southern Mindanao Regional Committee
The 10th ID covers areas within the Davao and Caraga regions, where the SMRC has operated. The recent arrests have disrupted the committee’s ability to threaten peace and security in these provinces. This operation significantly weakened the rebel group’s structure and capacity.
In the past two months, two other SMRC leaders were neutralized by military forces. Elbert Echavez, alias Aldrin, the head of the Regional Sentro De Grabidad Jaguar, was killed in a clash in Boston, Davao Oriental on April 27. Jeffry Casal, alias Lalai, the vice team leader, died in a skirmish in Lingig, Surigao del Sur on May 10. These actions, combined with the recent arrests, mark steady progress in the campaign against insurgency.
Authorities Continue to Secure Communities
General Hambala acknowledged the dedication of troops and police in maintaining peace and security. He noted that these victories are vital for the continued safety and development of the affected communities.
Local leaders noted that such operations send a strong message to remaining insurgents and encourage cooperation from residents who desire lasting peace.
