MANILA, Philippines — The National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) said on Thursday that it remains “undeterred” by the anti-discrimination complaint filed against the agency by the progressive Makabayan bloc.
According to Atty. James Clifford Santos, spokesperson for the task force’s Legal Cooperation Cluster (LCC), the complaint is viewed not as a threat, but as an opportunity.
“The NTF-ELCAC-LCC is undeterred by the complaint filed by the Makabayan bloc with the Commission on Elections (Comelec). We see this as a chance to present solid and reliable evidence in a tribunal setting to reveal the true identities of these individuals,” Santos said in a statement.
Makabayan Bloc Files Complaint Over Alleged Red-Tagging
On Tuesday, the Makabayan bloc formally lodged a complaint against NTF-ELCAC Executive Director Ernesto Torres Jr., alleging violations of Comelec Resolution No. 11116, which includes provisions against election-related discrimination.
The complaint stems from the alleged red-tagging of progressive lawmakers, including Gabriela Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas.
Liza Maza, chair of the Makabayan coalition and senatorial candidate, said the red-tagging campaign has led to threats and harassment against their members.
“We are filing an election offense complaint against Mr. Torres because we have gathered evidence showing he personally red-tagged Rep. Arlene Brosas,” Maza stated.
NTF-ELCAC Denies Allegations, Calls for Denunciation of CPP
In response, Santos urged members of the Makabayan bloc to publicly denounce the alleged atrocities committed by the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), which the NTF-ELCAC links to insurgent activity.
“The NTF-ELCAC does not engage in election-related offenses or deceptive tactics. We remain committed to a whole-of-nation approach in achieving inclusive and sustainable peace,” he said.
Santos emphasized the agency’s mission to support a peaceful, credible electoral process, stating that its efforts aim to help voters make informed decisions in the upcoming Eleksyon 2025.
