Governor Suspends Dredging Operations in Barangay Talabaan
Occidental Mindoro authorities have ordered the suspension of dredging activities carried out by a construction company in Barangay Talabaan, Mamburao. The move came after concerns were raised about the company’s alleged noncompliance with permits and the potential risks posed to the safety of local residents.
Specifically, the governor instructed PERRC Construction and Development Corporation to halt all river restoration dredging operations. This decision followed a complaint filed by a resident through the local citizens’ complaint hotline, highlighting the urgency of the matter.
Alleged Permit Violations and Safety Concerns
According to reports, the complaint alleges that the company did not adhere to the requirements outlined in their issued permits. Furthermore, the dredging activities reportedly took place close to residential areas along the sea, raising serious concerns about the safety and well-being of the community.
“The said complaint stemmed from the alleged noncompliance of your company with the permits issued relative to your river restoration through dredging operations being conducted in Barangay Talabaan, Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro,” the governor stated.
He further explained, “Allegedly, your company is operating in the sea near the residential area to the detriment of the lives, environment and safety of the residents. In addition, it was alleged that numerous dredging vessels arrived in the area and the operations became more aggressive.”
Official Correspondence and Temporary Suspension
Authorities had sent a letter to PERRC on May 16, requesting a formal explanation along with supporting documentation regarding the activities. While awaiting the results of an ongoing investigation, the company has been ordered to suspend all dredging operations and related work in the designated area until further notice.
“In view of the foregoing and pending the result of the investigation, your company is hereby directed to temporarily suspend the conduct of any dredging operations and related activities in the assigned area, until further notice,” the official directive read.
Community Impact and Next Steps
Local community leaders expressed relief at the suspension, emphasizing the importance of protecting residents and the environment. They also urged the company to cooperate fully with authorities to resolve the issues swiftly.
Sources familiar with the situation indicate that further updates will be provided once the investigation concludes and the company responds to the suspension order.
