OIC Urges Muslim States to Boost BARMM Support

OIC Calls for Increased Support to BARMM

ILIGAN CITY — The Philippine government warmly welcomed the recent appeal from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) urging Muslim states and organizations to strengthen their support for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). This call for aid comes at a crucial time as BARMM faces ongoing challenges in peace, security, and development.

According to a statement from the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (Opapru), the OIC’s call is timely and relevant, especially with the first BARMM regional parliamentary election scheduled for October 13, 2025. The national government sees this as a pivotal moment to reinforce the peace process in the region.

OIC’s Steadfast Backing of BARMM Peace Process

Opapru emphasized that the resolution from the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) highlights the organization’s unwavering commitment to the Bangsamoro peace process. It showcases the OIC’s eagerness to nurture and sustain peace gains by fostering genuine dialogue and mutual understanding among the Philippine government, leading Moro groups, and other key stakeholders.

The CFM resolution also commended President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for his strong dedication to promoting unity, inclusivity, and socioeconomic growth in BARMM. It acknowledged the efforts to implement interventions that encourage peace and development across the region.

Recognizing Key Leaders and Historic Agreements

The resolution pays tribute to Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) chief Ahod “Al Haj Murad” Ebrahim for his leadership as BARMM’s first Chief Minister. It also welcomed Abdulraof Macacua’s appointment as his successor, recognizing the continued leadership vital for the region’s progress.

Opapru noted the OIC’s instrumental role in historic peace agreements, such as the 1976 Tripoli Agreement between the Philippine government and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), and the 1996 Final Peace Agreement. These accords paved the way for significant milestones in the peace process.

The current administration remains fully committed to advancing the Bangsamoro peace process, aiming to bring lasting stability and development to the region, local leaders said.
