Online voting participation by overseas Filipino workers rises in UAE
With just days left before the May 12 deadline for online voting, Philippine embassy officials in the United Arab Emirates report a clear surge in online voting participation by overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). This rise is expected as the clock ticks down on the month-long overseas online voting period.
Although exact numbers are not disclosed, embassy staff confirm that more OFWs are casting their votes now than in previous days. Voting closes sharply at 3 p.m. UAE time (7 p.m. Philippine time) on May 12.
Increased turnout as deadline approaches
Vice Consul Kevin Mark Gomez, chair of the Special Board of Elections, said this uptick was anticipated. “The number of voters really picked up in the last few days,” he shared. “Many are rushing to enroll and vote, especially after the Commission on Elections extended the enrollment period for online voting. We are optimistic this trend will continue.”
Outreach efforts have also intensified. Weekend activities in Abu Dhabi City and earlier visits to the Western Region and Al Ain aim to encourage more OFWs to participate.
Embassy support and voter challenges
The Philippine embassy remains open on weekends to assist registered OFWs with the online voting process. Most visitors come for help with enrollment and casting their votes online.
However, some OFWs decided not to continue after learning that manual voting is no longer an option. Gomez explained, “Some arrived expecting to vote manually but left after we clarified that only online voting is available now. We take time to explain the process and listen to their concerns, as long as they remain respectful.”
Engaging the community and spreading awareness
To reach as many voters as possible, embassy teams have partnered with Filipino influencers across the UAE. This helps amplify the message and encourage more Filipinos abroad to vote.
Ambassador Alonso Ferdinand Ver also urged OFWs to participate: “We are counting on your involvement. Join the elections, make your voice heard, and ensure your votes are counted through this online voting system. Thank you very much.”
UAE leads in registered overseas Filipino voters
The UAE has the highest number of registered overseas Filipino voters worldwide, with 189,892 individuals.
Of these, 66,001 are registered in Abu Dhabi, while 123,891 belong to Dubai and the Northern Emirates. Embassy officials advise voters to cast their ballots early to avoid technical glitches or system slowdowns.
Next steps after voting closes
The Board of Canvassers will meet at 11 a.m. on May 12 to start canvassing right after the online polls close. Ballots from the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai will be transferred to Abu Dhabi, where they will be consolidated and sent to the Commission on Elections.
Philippine officials continue to encourage all eligible overseas Filipino voters in the UAE to make their voices count through online voting participation by overseas Filipinos, ensuring their role in shaping the country’s future.
