Oriental Mindoro Cancels Trips in All Ports Due to Tropical Storm Crising
CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro – Authorities canceled boat trips from five ports in Oriental Mindoro on Saturday because of rough sea conditions caused by Tropical Storm Crising. The storm, also known internationally as Wipha, continued to bring heavy rain to parts of Luzon and the Visayas even after it had left the Philippine Area of Responsibility before noon. This led local officials to halt various sea trips for safety reasons.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) announced that fast craft trips between Calapan Port and Batangas City Port were canceled starting 11 a.m. Meanwhile, roll-on, roll-off vessels were permitted to operate despite the storm. Furthermore, trips at Balatero Port in Puerto Galera bound for Batangas, and vice versa, were also stopped. In addition, voyages to and from Pinamalayan Port were suspended. Fast craft ferry services in the southern towns of Roxas and Bulalacao were likewise halted as a precaution.
Current Conditions and Impact on Infrastructure
As of Saturday, local leaders reported that all roads and bridges across the province remained passable. Major river systems stayed at normal levels, and no flooding incidents were recorded. Despite these positive signs, power interruptions were experienced in Puerto Galera, Pinamalayan, and Mansalay. A short power outage also affected a village in Calapan City, specifically in Barangay Lalud, due to clearing operations by the Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative.
Vinscent Gahol, head of the PDRRMO, emphasized that the province was under a “white alert” status, meaning routine operations continue. However, residents were strongly advised to stay updated by monitoring regular advisories from local officials. All PDRRMO personnel were placed on duty to manage monitoring stations and coordinate efforts with local disaster risk reduction and management councils.
