Persistent Flooding Hits Over 100 Barangays in Maguindanao Del Sur
Maguindanao del Sur continues to battle severe flooding as over 100 barangays remain submerged after nearly a week of heavy rains. The combined effects of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and a low-pressure area have caused widespread inundation, according to disaster response sources.
As of 5 p.m. on May 21, flooding persists in 111 out of 121 barangays across 12 towns, while waters have started to recede in other affected locations. Reports indicate that nearly 270,000 residents have been impacted by the floods in towns including Ampatuan, Datu Abdullah Sangki, Datu Anggal Midtimbang, and Datu Piang.
Impact on Communities and Emergency Response Efforts
In addition to Maguindanao del Sur, Datu Odin Sinsuat in Maguindanao del Norte also experienced flooding. Almost 7,000 people sought refuge in evacuation centers as local officials and agencies mobilized to assist those affected.
These towns border the vast 200,000-hectare Ligawasan Marsh, a critical catch basin for Mindanao’s river systems. Community leaders attributed the recurring floods to heavy silt deposits in the marsh and connected rivers, which reduce water flow and cause overflow during heavy rains.
Relief Operations and Government Actions
Emergency response teams intensified their efforts in both Maguindanao del Norte and del Sur. Regional authorities dispatched aid and coordinated relief operations to ensure the safety and needs of affected populations were met. The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region’s interim Chief Minister directed key ministries to deliver assistance and support to flood-hit areas.
Damage to Agriculture and Infrastructure
Floodwaters have devastated over 2,000 hectares of crops and livestock, further threatening local livelihoods. Due to the severity of the situation, a state of calamity was declared in the town of Datu Piang on May 21.
Additionally, two wooden bridges in Barangay Bagumbong, Mamasapano, were damaged by the rising waters. Flash floods prompted rescue operations on May 20, saving dozens of residents in Datu Anggal Midtimbang.
Distribution of Aid and Support Services
The Ministry of Social Services and Development, through its regional and provincial units, has been actively distributing relief goods. Initial deliveries included food packs, hygiene kits, and sleeping kits to towns such as Ampatuan, Datu Piang, and Datu Anggal Midtimbang. Hot meals were also served to evacuees to address immediate needs.
Authorities continue monitoring the situation as they work to mitigate further impacts and assist displaced families. Community members remain hopeful for faster recovery and improved flood management in the coming months.
