Over 200 Residents Evacuated in Mindoro Flooding Crisis
At least 223 residents were evacuated across Oriental and Occidental Mindoro due to severe flooding caused by Tropical Storms Dante and Emong, as well as the intensified southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat. Authorities took swift action to ensure the safety of families living in vulnerable areas, sources said.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) carried out preemptive and forced evacuations starting Wednesday night through early Thursday. These efforts affected 83 families in flood-prone communities within the two provinces.
Evacuations Across Mindoro Provinces
In Oriental Mindoro, 112 individuals from five barangays in Calapan City and the town of Baco were relocated to safer areas. Meanwhile, in Occidental Mindoro, 111 people from the municipalities of Mamburao and Sablayan were also evacuated to avoid harm.
Local officials raised a red rainfall warning in Oriental Mindoro due to the continuous heavy downpour, urging residents to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols. The combination of tropical storms and the persistent habagat has caused widespread flooding, putting many communities at risk.
Authorities Respond to Flood Risks
Emergency responders coordinated closely with local leaders to monitor water levels and provide immediate assistance to those displaced. The proactive evacuation measures have helped prevent casualties amid the intense weather conditions, local leaders noted.
Residents expressed concern but appreciated the timely response. One evacuee said, “Mas ligtas kami dito, kahit na mahirap umalis sa bahay namin. Salamat sa mga tumulong.” (We feel safer here, even though it’s difficult to leave our homes. Thanks to those who helped.)
Authorities continue to advise the public to stay updated on weather alerts and avoid flood-affected areas until conditions improve. Relief efforts and monitoring remain ongoing as the region braces for possible further rainfall.
