Over 20,000 Motor Vehicles with Expired Registration Seized Nationwide
In July, authorities apprehended over 20,000 motor vehicles with expired registration across the Philippines. The Land Transportation Office (LTO) reported a total of 20,089 vehicles caught during nationwide operations last month, underscoring the ongoing crackdown on unregistered vehicles.
More than half of these apprehended vehicles were motorcycles, tallying up to 12,672 units. Additionally, 3,712 tricycles, 1,800 vans, and 887 private sedans were part of the total seizures. The LTO also noted that 646 trucks and 253 sports utility vehicles were flagged, with the remaining vehicles including passenger jeepneys and buses.
High Apprehensions in Key Regions
Most motor vehicles with expired registration were found in Calabarzon, which covers Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon provinces. Other hotspots included the Cagayan Valley Region and Mimaropa, which consists of Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan.
Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II, the LTO chief, emphasized the importance of vehicle registration. He explained that registration is not just a legal requirement but also a critical measure to ensure roadworthiness. “This is not just a matter of fulfilling registration obligations. It is also about roadworthiness because vehicle inspections are strict before any vehicle is registered,” he said in Filipino.
Warnings and Penalties for Delinquent Motorists
Mendoza warned motorists who delay renewing their registrations. Those caught driving unregistered vehicles face heavy fines. “Apart from the penalty for late registration, you will have to pay ₱10,000 if you are caught,” he stressed in Filipino.
He urged vehicle owners to register their vehicles promptly to avoid these penalties and enjoy peace of mind, especially with the LTO’s intensified enforcement efforts.
Furthermore, all apprehended vehicles must pass a roadworthiness inspection before they are released back to their owners. Mendoza also encouraged the public to report unregistered vehicles to the LTO to help compel owners to renew their registrations.
In comparison, the LTO recorded 20,307 apprehensions of unregistered motor vehicles in June, reflecting a consistent effort to enforce registration compliance nationwide.
