Free Tuberculosis Screenings Reach Over 7,000 Filipinos
More than 7,000 individuals across 17 regions in the Philippines have benefited from free tuberculosis (TB) screenings and related health services, officials reported. This nationwide effort aims to strengthen early detection and treatment of TB, a persistent public health challenge.
The Department of Health (DOH) confirmed that the free tuberculosis screenings and comprehensive health services were part of the Nationwide Simultaneous Active Case Finding and other initiatives led by the government and partner organizations. The focus on early detection and preventive care is critical in curbing the spread of TB.
Comprehensive Free Services Provided
The services offered to the public included chest X-rays for TB screening, Tuberculin Skin Tests, and sputum testing to confirm TB cases. In addition, HIV testing coupled with counseling was made available, alongside valuable health education sessions to inform communities about TB prevention and care.
Local leaders noted that these efforts are designed to reach vulnerable groups and those at higher risk of contracting TB, ensuring timely intervention and improved health outcomes.
Expanding Tuberculosis Preventive Treatment Coverage
“Layon ng DOH na mapalawak at mapabilis ang Tuberculosis Preventive Treatment (TPT) coverage na napatunayang epektibong proteksyon laban sa TB,” the agency emphasized, highlighting their commitment to widen and accelerate Tuberculosis Preventive Treatment coverage.
Health officials explained that TPT is primarily administered to individuals exposed to TB patients, people living with HIV, and those with weakened immune systems. This preventive approach has proven effective in protecting at-risk populations from developing active TB.
Burden of Tuberculosis in the Philippines
According to data from the Integrated Tuberculosis Information System, a total of 192,733 TB cases were recorded from January to June 2025. This underscores the urgency of sustained screening and preventive efforts nationwide.
Community members stressed the importance of continuing education and accessible services to combat the disease effectively and reduce its impact on Filipino families.
