Paitan Dam Project Aims to Improve Pangasinan Irrigation
President Marcos expressed hope that the Paitan Dam, expected to irrigate more than 12,000 hectares of farmland in Pangasinan, will be operational by 2027. The project, known as the Lower Agno River Irrigation System (LARIS) Paitan Dam, had its groundbreaking ceremony on May 23. During the event, Marcos underscored the significant benefits this infrastructure would bring once completed.
“Hinihiling ko sana na matapos na ito sa 2027 o mas maaga pa kung maaari. Para naman maramdaman kaagad ng mga kababayan natin ang benepisyo ng LARIS Paitan Dam,” Marcos stated, emphasizing his wish for an early completion so that local communities could quickly experience the advantages.
The Impact of Paitan Dam on Local Agriculture
According to community leaders and local experts, the dam will provide irrigation to 12,041 hectares of agricultural land. This development is expected to directly benefit farmers affiliated with irrigators’ associations, enhancing their productivity and livelihood.
The Paitan Dam is a flagship irrigation initiative by the National Irrigation Administration’s Region 1 office. It aims to harness the water from the Agno River, one of the largest river systems in the Philippines, to deliver a stable and sustainable water supply to farms in Pangasinan, Tarlac, and Nueva Ecija.
Managing Water for Floods and Droughts
The dam’s design will help manage seasonal water challenges. Instead of allowing water to cause flooding during the rainy season, the project will store this water for use in dry periods.
“Imbes na bumaha tuwing tag-ulan, ang gagawin natin ay iipunin natin ang tubig para mapakinabangan sa panahon ng tagtuyot,” the president explained. This strategy is expected to reduce damage from flooding and provide a reliable water source during droughts.
Ensuring Year-Round Water Supply and Increased Harvests
Marcos further highlighted that reliable water availability throughout the year will no longer be a distant dream for farmers.
“Hindi na pangarap ang pagkakaroon ng tubig—tag-araw man o tag-ulan. Ang masaganang ani, [abot-kamay] na,” he added, expressing optimism that bountiful harvests will soon be within reach.
The project is also anticipated to boost farmers’ income by increasing crop yields. “Dahil dito, dadami ang ani at inaasahan ang pagtaas ng produksyon ng palay,” the president noted, pointing to a future of enhanced agricultural output.
Looking Ahead: Benefits Beyond Irrigation
Reports indicate that the Paitan Dam will not only support farming but also contribute to the broader regional economy by stabilizing water supply and reducing flood risks. This infrastructure project represents a vital step toward sustainable agriculture in the region.
As the dam progresses toward its targeted operation in 2027, local farmers and communities eagerly anticipate the positive changes this project promises.
