Young Filipino Achieves Silver in International Math Olympiad
A Grade 9 student from the Philippine Science High School–Central Luzon campus in Clark Freeport has proudly secured a silver medal in a prestigious international math competition held in the United States. This remarkable achievement highlights the talent and dedication of Filipino youth in global academic arenas.
Fourteen-year-old Liam Casey Opulento rose to prominence after excelling in the 6th Copernicus Olympiad at Columbia University in New York City, which took place from July 26 to 28. He advanced from the online preliminary rounds, where he competed against approximately 5,000 students worldwide, to join around 150 finalists representing 22 countries.
Overcoming Financial Challenges to Shine
Despite initial financial difficulties that almost prevented their participation, Liam’s family received generous support from friends and relatives. “We initially intended not to go to the US anymore due to insufficient funds, but friends and relatives urged us to go, even extending financial support for our trip to New York. In the end, Liam was able to join the olympiad at Columbia University,” his father shared in a phone interview.
During the March online preliminaries, Liam ranked first among all Philippine participants and secured seventh place internationally. He is the eldest of two siblings and completed his elementary education as valedictorian at Achievers Special Education Center in Angeles City.
Consistent Excellence in Math Competitions
Local educators and community members noted Liam’s consistent performance in math contests. He has previously earned gold and silver medals in international competitions held in Hong Kong, Macau, and Thailand. His journey reflects a persistent commitment to academic excellence.
Reflecting on the Silver Medal Victory
In a heartfelt message, Liam expressed mixed feelings about his award: “I was feeling that I could’ve done better. Only one item, and I could have bagged the gold. Hopefully, in the next competition! But of course, I am thankful that I got the Silver Award in this prestigious competition, and also to those who supported me—parents, relatives, friends, and teachers.”
He added that his experience in New York has fueled his motivation to continue competing in math olympiads. Liam hopes his success will inspire other young Filipinos to pursue academic challenges and opportunities.
Inspiration Beyond the Medal
For Liam, the journey was more than just winning a medal. “In the end, it was the experience that was important,” he said, underscoring the value of learning and growth through competition.
