Party-list Organizations Must Change Names for Elections
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has announced that party-list organizations will no longer be allowed to use names linked to popular TV shows or government assistance programs in the upcoming elections. This move aims to maintain clarity and relevance in party-list identities.
“Hindi na kami papayag sa susunod na accreditation process na gagamit sila ng mga sikat na telenovela na pangalan. Hindi kami papayag na gagamit sila ng mga pangalan ng ayuda. Hindi na po tama yun,” said the election official.
This means that the commission will prohibit the use of catchy or misleading names that could confuse voters or imply government support not related to the party’s actual platform.
Ensuring Party Names Reflect Advocacies
Though the Comelec cannot retroactively remove accredited party-lists with such names, it emphasized that new applicants must clearly represent their advocacies through their party names.
“Sa mga susunod we will no longer allow. If they want accreditation, change the names of their party in accordance with their principles, kung ano ang kanilang plataporma,” the official added.
Voters are encouraged to look for party-list organizations that genuinely reflect their platforms and advocacies rather than names that capitalize on popular culture or government aid programs.
Looking Ahead to Future Elections
By enforcing these guidelines, the Commission on Elections hopes to promote transparency and integrity in party-list elections. This will help ensure that party-list groups focus on their core missions and do not mislead the electorate with names that have no connection to their political agenda.
