Fire Erupts on Passenger-Cargo Vessel Off Quezon Coast
A fire broke out on the passenger-cargo vessel MV Monreal due to an electrical short circuit, officials reported. The incident took place just one nautical mile from San Andres town in Quezon province, raising immediate concerns for the safety of those on board.
According to community members, the blaze was swiftly contained, preventing further damage and casualties. The vessel was en route from Port of Aroroy in Masbate to Port of San Andres when the electrical fault ignited the fire.
Swift Actions Ensure Safety of All Onboard
Local leaders noted that a licensed electrician aboard the MV Monreal promptly restored power after the fire was controlled. This quick intervention helped stabilize the situation and allowed the vessel to safely dock at San Andres Port later the same day.
Authorities began the orderly disembarkation of passengers and crew upon arrival. Officials confirmed that all 119 individuals—comprising 66 passengers and 22 crew members—were unharmed and in good condition.
Investigation and Follow-Up Measures Underway
The Philippine Coast Guard has since detained the MV Monreal for further inspection. The vessel’s master was instructed to submit a marine protest, and sworn statements were collected from passengers and crew to aid in the investigation.
Community members confirmed that MV Monreal is owned by Kho Shipping Lines. The incident has prompted calls for stricter safety protocols on passenger-cargo vessels to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
