Passenger Jumps From Boat Bound for Oriental Mindoro
A passenger believed to be struggling with mental health issues jumped off a boat heading to Oriental Mindoro last Saturday, authorities reported. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Southern Tagalog confirmed the incident took place about one nautical mile (1.85 kilometers) from Baco Chico Island.
According to the PCG, the vessel’s captain shared that the chief steward spotted the man in the water and quickly acted to rescue him around noon. The timely response ensured the passenger’s safety.
Rescue and Arrival Details
The man, a 35-year-old from Zamboanga City, was said to have a history of mental health concerns, the vessel’s master relayed. Both the passenger and his companion were safely brought ashore upon arrival at Calapan City Port.
This boat was traveling along the route from Batangas Port to Calapan City Port. This journey is part of the Philippine Nautical Highway, an integrated system of roads and roll-on/roll-off ferry routes connecting major islands across the country, local sources noted.
The quick rescue highlights the vigilance of the crew and the importance of safety measures on this busy maritime route. Authorities continue to monitor and assist passengers to prevent similar incidents.
