PBBM Party-list to Challenge Disqualification at Supreme Court

PBBM to Appeal Comelec Disqualification

In a bold move, the Pilipinas Babangon Muli (PBBM) Party-list announced on Friday its plan to challenge the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) decision to disqualify it from Eleksyon 2025. The party vows to bring the case before the Supreme Court.

Recently, the Comelec en banc upheld a ruling that cancelled PBBM’s registration due to alleged misrepresentation. The party-list, however, insists this ruling is unjust and based on a misinterpretation of their regional identity.

Arguments Against Disqualification

According to PBBM, the Comelec en banc disregarded existing legal precedents that support a liberal and inclusive view of party-list representation. The party emphasized that having officers and nominees from outside the CALABARZON region does not change their core status as a regional party.

“We remain a regional party representing CALABARZON. There was no misrepresentation,” the party stressed in their statement.

Background of the Case

Back in April, the Comelec Second Division cancelled PBBM’s registration, accusing the party of misrepresenting itself as a regional political group for CALABARZON, while its nominees came exclusively from outside the region.

Before this, the poll body had acknowledged PBBM’s reach in CALABARZON, citing its presence in 140 out of 142 cities and municipalities there. The party also declared its intent to advocate for the rights and interests of CALABARZON citizens.

Residency Issue and Party Constitution

During oral arguments, PBBM clarified that residency in Region IV-A is not a requirement for party membership under its own constitution and by-laws. This point, however, was contested by the Comelec Second Division, which said it undermines the foundation of the party’s registration as a regional political entity.

Firm Rejection of Comelec Ruling

The party-list firmly rejects the Comelec ruling, highlighting their long-standing work in the region through hands-on programs and genuine partnerships. They believe these efforts prove their authentic connection to CALABARZON communities.

As the legal battle continues, PBBM prepares to assert their right to participate in the 2025 elections, hoping for a fair and just resolution from the Supreme Court.
