PCG Assists Passengers Following RoRo Engine Failure Off Mindoro
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) swiftly aided hundreds of passengers after a roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessel bound for Romblon experienced an engine failure off the coast of Oriental Mindoro on Sunday, July 28, 2025. The incident raised concerns but ended safely thanks to quick PCG intervention.
The vessel was traveling from Batangas Port to Odiongan, Romblon, carrying 383 passengers, three crew members, and 20 rolling cargo units. However, its port engine suffered a crankcase malfunction, forcing the ship to rely solely on its starboard engine as it turned back towards Batangas.
Safe Return and Passenger Transfer
Upon arrival at Ramp 5 of Batangas Port, all passengers and crew were accounted for, safe, and in good condition. PCG personnel along with medical responders were on hand to provide immediate assistance.
Around 8:30 a.m., 375 passengers and 19 rolling cargoes were transferred to another vessel, M/V Maria Xenia, which continued the voyage to Odiongan. Authorities ensured that the transfer was orderly and that all passengers were comfortable before resuming the journey.
Inspection and Safety Measures Underway
The Maritime Safety Services Unit – Southern Tagalog assigned its Vessel Safety Enforcement Inspection branch to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the affected RoRo vessel. This step is part of ongoing efforts to maintain maritime safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Local officials emphasize the importance of strict vessel maintenance and safety protocols to protect passengers and crew alike. “Safety must always come first,” sources said, highlighting the PCG’s role in maritime emergency response.
