Tragedy struck along the SCTEX in Tarlac last Thursday, claiming the lives of 10 individuals in a devastating multi-vehicle collision. Among the victims was Seawoman 1 Diane Janica Alinas of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), leaving behind a shattered family—and a 2-year-old child who survived the crash.
The PCG swiftly responded, pledging immediate aid to the grieving family. Commandant Ronnie Gil Gavan announced a financial assistance package of P250,000 to help ease their burden, in addition to support from other agencies. Alinas, who served the PCG for five dedicated years, will also be honored posthumously with a service award.
Authorities wasted no time taking decisive action. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) directed the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to suspend operations of Solid North Transit Inc., the bus company involved in the calamity. Meanwhile, the LTFRB called on the Passenger Accident Management and Insurance Agency (PAMI) to fast-track insurance claims, ensuring families receive the P400,000 indemnity allotted for each deceased passenger.
“I instructed PAMI to immediately address the needs of those involved in the crash. Identifying the victims and compensating families cannot wait,” LTFRB Chair Atty. Teofilo Guadiz III said.
The DOTr is also exploring the possibility of criminal charges against the bus driver and the management of Solid North Transit Inc. As the community mourns, authorities underline a stark message: accountability must follow tragedy to prevent future loss of life on our roads.
