PDEA Teams Up With Delivery Firms to Stop Online Illegal Drug Trafficking
The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) has taken a decisive step to combat the growing issue of online illegal drug trafficking. By partnering with private delivery companies, PDEA aims to strengthen the fight against the shipment and distribution of illicit drugs through courier services.
Recently, PDEA signed a memorandum of agreement with Flash Express Philippines, Co., Ltd. Inc., marking a collaborative effort to prevent the transport of packages containing illegal drugs and controlled precursors and essential chemicals (CPECs). This partnership is a clear example of how public and private sectors can unite to tackle the problem of online illegal drug trafficking.
Flash Express Commits to Vigilance and Reporting
Under the agreement, Flash Express Philippines has pledged to engage their accredited delivery drivers in identifying and reporting suspicious packages that may contain illegal substances. Additionally, the company plans to enforce strict drug-free workplace policies to support this mission.
PDEA Director General Isagani R. Nerez acknowledged the challenges delivery services face. “Flash Express Philippines may unknowingly handle packages misdeclared or fraudulently shipped by individuals involved in drug trafficking despite diligent efforts to prevent illegal drug activities,” he explained. He further emphasized that delivery drivers could unintentionally become conduits for illegal drugs by delivering contraband directly to consumers’ doorsteps.
Strengthening National Anti-Drug Efforts Through Collaboration
The agreement reflects proactive steps to align private delivery operations with the country’s broader national anti-drug campaign. Flash Express highlighted their commitment by stating, “Through this agreement, we are taking proactive steps to align our operations with national anti-drug efforts.”
Director General Nerez stressed the importance of cooperation among stakeholders in addressing the massive challenge posed by illegal drugs. He noted that such partnerships embody the vision of President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr., who calls for unity and active citizen involvement to realize a “Bagong Pilipinas.”
The memorandum of agreement was signed on June 11 by Nerez and Reginald Rex Pumihic, Deputy Director for Communications and Government Relations of Flash Express Philippines. This signing symbolizes the growing culture of collaboration between government agencies and private sectors to curb illegal drug trafficking, especially in the online space.
